Freedom

As we await a vote that benefits the super-wealthy, destroys our country with debt, and leads to children starving, each of us must look at what matters.

John Lewis in Across That Bridge wrote:

Freedom is not a state; it is an act. It is not some enchanted garden perched high on a distant plateau where we can finally sit down and rest. Freedom is the continuous action we all must take, and each generation must do its part to create an even more fair, more just society.

Last night I watched a recording of an event put on by the Tergar Institute.  Uvinie Lubecki, Ocean Vuong, and Ronan Harrington spoke.  I’m inspired by their intelligence and commitment to the world and themselves.

Some notes:

Uvinie: I saw no other way.  Purpose is a way of being.  It’s how we drink a cup of tea.  Awareness, Love and Compassion, lead to connection and wisdom.

Ocean: Develop the voice you already have.  Re-read a book like Moby Dick.  Understand why it’s a classic.  Live the Buddha’s final words: Go forth with earnestness. Try with all your heart. Our youth are afraid of being “cringy”, of shame. Give ourselves permission to fail so there is no shame.

Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche: Failure is the mother of success.

Ronan: Speak truth to power.  Resilience requires balance.  Know when to open and close so you don’t ruin your health as he did trying to save the world, and now he recovers from pain and addiction.  Resilience requires boundaries.

Awaiting the Vote
May our flag represent freedom, not oligarchy
May we live in connection and honor, respect, and celebrate diversity.

Day Without Immigrants

The news today is beyond devastating as Musk takes over our government and shuts down foreign aid. There is no compassion in this, no awareness of how many will be affected in this country and the world.

The Trump administration has also warned more than 1,100 Environmental Protection Agency employees who work on climate change, reducing air pollution, enforcing environmental laws and other programs that they could be fired at any time.

That’s in addition to the insanity of the tariffs.

Meanwhile my local family-owned grocery store Good Earth sends this email which I’m thrilled to honor and respect. I wonder why this isn’t more publicized.

They announce: This is a day without immigrants and products will be limited.

Today, Monday, February 3rd is the Day Without Immigrants, a grassroots organizing movement focused on unifying the voices of immigrants across the country. Today, people throughout the United States are refraining from going to work, attending school, and shopping to help demonstrate the essential impact that immigrants have on our society.

At Good Earth, we recognize that this is an important moment for many of our staff. We support our staff members choice to strike and participate in this day of activism. We also support our staff members who have elected to work today.

We are focused on providing grocery essentials today, however, our product offerings will be very limited in both stores, and all of our food service counters, bakery counters, and cafes will be closed. We ask for your patience with out of stock items and for your support of our staff.

And the tides come and go

The Tide Has Turned

I’m thrilled with all I’m reading about Kamala Harris. Finally, someone who is speaking it as it is. It’s time to call Trump out for who he is, what he has done, and what he and his cronies plan to do.

Heather Cox Richardson writes this today:

Today more than 350 national security leaders endorsed Harris for president, noting that if elected president, “she would enter that office with more significant national security experience than the four Presidents prior to President Biden.” As vice president, she “has met with more than 150 world leaders and traveled to 21 countries,” the authors wrote, and they called out her work across the globe from her work strengthening partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region to her historic trip to Africa and her efforts to expand U.S. relationships with nations in the Caribbean and North Central America. In contrast to Harris, the letter said, “Trump is a threat to America’s national security.”

Just that, is enough to vote for Harris, and of course, there is more. Blood pressure across the nation comes down with a return to issues, clarity, ethics, compassion, and sanity.

Interconnectivity

In the last few months I’ve been in the desert area of Phoenix, the redwoods of Woodside, passed through the golden grasses of California hills and settled by the bay and ocean in Marin to watch the waves and tides move in and out.

These different landscapes are openings, portals, twined in diversity, offering expanded and different ways to participate, create and breathe.

Today I read Robert Hubbel. Timothy Mellon, who inherited a fortune of $14 billion “donated $50 million to Trump the day after Trump was convicted of 34 felonies for interfering in the 2020 election by falsifying documents to conceal his sexual encounter with Stormy Daniels”.

Mellon wants Trump to be president so he doesn’t have to pay taxes to support the network that connects us.  I find myself feeling compassion for him.  How sad and tragic to be so isolated and deluded.

Maybe if we unite our hearts in sending warmth, love, and care to him, the ice floe on which he lives will melt and he’ll dissolve into the waters of this planet we share.

Election Day

It’s a privilege to vote, even when the choices may not appear to be the best.  We vote with compromise, recognizing no one candidate can possibly fulfill our own personal desires but we choose who comes closest, who is most representative of our personal and big picture desires and views.

Recently there have been some unpleasant incidents involving a few of the high school students in the community where I live. This has led to a great deal of discussion, some productive and some not.

On the side of kindness, some suggest that teenagers need a place to let off steam and we don’t have that here. Others point out that this group of youngsters has been, and is still going through major issues with the pandemic. Young people have fears around climate change, their financial future, and their ability to contribute to what is on rapid approach. They also have to process the bombardment of blatant lies and lack of ethics in some who lead the media stream.

How do we lead our children on an open and compassionate path? This is a day to reflect on just that.

Meister Eckhart:

And suddenly you know: It’s time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings.
